We recently had the opportunity to view the first two editions of Scary Hollow Production’s Haunted Media Magazine. Available on CD-ROM, the magazine focuses on the Haunted Attraction Industry with cover stories on the leaders of the pack, such as “Knott’s Scary Farm” and “Shipwreck” aboard the Queen Mary to “Featured Haunts,” a section dedicated to the home haunter (and while these are home haunts, they far surpass the plastic cauldron and the “witch that has flown into the tree” available at your favorite Halloween Stores). Spotlight articles focus on the people behind the industry such as Ex Mortis, and a Workshop feature brings us Larry Bones of Boneyard Effects, where we are walked thru a step by step of how to apply a foam facial prosthetic mask.

The overall feel of the magazine is very professional. All film sequences are well shot, none of the graininess or poor lighting as seen in many of the haunted attraction films, the sound is clearly audible at all times. Narrated throughout, with well placed appropriate choices of music for emphasis, they introduce us to the everyday people behind the attractions, the people not used to being in front of the camera but behind the black curtain (and is evident by the slightest tinge of discomfort about being the center of attention, only loosening up as their enthusiasm about their craft takes over).

Very thorough in their coverage, they give us the history of the locations they cover, starting with a man’s dream of being a farmer, thru that man’s dream being realized, to exceeding what he ever could have imagined, his “road side stand” now home to the Grand-Daddy of all Halloween Theme Park Events or the history of the luxury liner that had pampered the rich, dressed in gray for the war effort, shed her uniform to once again serve the public, to the dock where she sits today, a memorial to a bygone era and allegedly inhabited by real spirits.

If you enjoy reading HauntFreaks your going to love watching these CDs. We felt they were Interesting and very entertaining, a must for any die-hard Haunted Industry Enthusiast, well worth the yearly subscription asking price of a mere $29.95 for 4 issues. We look forward to the third edition which should be showing up at our mailbox soon.
