Just back from Cheerleader Massacre which premiered August 3rd 2002
in NJ at the historic Broadway Theater in Pittman. Written, Directed
and Produced by Mark Goles, it was a film in true “indy”
manner, production funds relying more on creativity than cold hard
cash, and the film utilized young up-starts Denise Tetkowski as
Misty, Shannon Murray as Nicole, Frankie Goldstone as Denise, and
Jason Neudecker as Misty’s boyfriend Mike. All played their
parts well.
The film opened in slasher style, with a gratuitous nude scene followed
by a gruesome murder. We flash to the present day Tarken, where
the cheerleaders of the town are being disemboweled one by one,
and left to ponder where the opening scene will apply, until the
conclusion of the film, where it is brought full circle.
We enjoyed the film, it took us back to Saturday afternoons, when
Creature Double Feature ruled the airwaves, the horror movies were
laced with comedy (tho I can’t say that was ALWAYS intentional)
and the plots required a small amount of “suspended belief.”
(If Brian and I had been to a party the night before, and he was
up before I was, AND in the park, AND found a body… my first
question would be “What in the HELL were you doing in the
park at this time of day?” Of course, we’re far from
teenagers now, and maybe kids don’t ask that nowadays…)
We do believe there is talent in this small crew and are looking
forward to viewing their next endeavor.
We had been advised the film was shot locally, and were particularly
thrilled when we found the cheerleaders in none other than Philly’s
“Fright Factory.” Discussing the locations with Mark
later, we discovered that several scenes had also been shot in another
HauntFreak’s favorite, the Bates Motel.
On the way out of the theater, we stopped for autographs from the
cast. Surprisingly, Frankie Goldstone who had played the role of
Denise so well, was not seated at the table with the other two female
stars (who, tho we’re not offended, had no idea who we were,
and addressed them to “HauntedFreaks.com” <sigh>
someday…..), and we obtained the autograph of Michael E. Pringle,
who had played the part of the police officer in the film.
Off to the cast party @ Shampoo, a local night club in Philly. The
party was held in the “Groove Garden” where those of
us over 21 imbibed in “Spooky Juice” and several other
drinks themed for the occasion. Once in the club, we relied on the
direction of 19 year old HauntFreak’s companion Carolyn, to
direct us to our destination (like for example, the ladies room….
No, I mean the uni-sex. Looking for the sink, I was pulled into
the next room where you washed your
hands in a fountain…. I’m getting old).
We had a fabulous time, running into some of the crew from Frightland
/ Fright Factory, who supplied props for the party, as well as entertainment
at the premiere while we awaited the arrival of the stars. We would
have liked to have spent more time with Mark, but you can imagine
that he was in popular demand that evening. Questioning whether
he would be at Horrorfind Weekend, he explained it was doubtful,
as they begin shooting Cheerleader Massacre 2 shortly. We understand
the very busy schedule, and hope to catch up with him when time
permits. We wish the entire cast and crew much luck with the film
and their aspiring careers. Websites
